Research profile

I have been engaged in soil ecological and ecotoxicological studies since 1983. The topics include microarthropods, earthworms and enchytraeids in agricultural land and disturbed natural habitats. I have applied soil fauna as bioindicators of soil quality in numerous investigations for the industry and governmental bodies. My research comprises ecological processes and interactions between soil organisms in mesocosms and in the field. I co-ordinated the EU FP5 project ECOGEN, 2002-2006, an inter-disciplinary project involving economists, agronomists, ecologists, and computer scientists. My management experiences include head of research team, Study Director of GLP compliant studies and project management of national and international projects such as EU projects and ringtesting. Currently, I am involved in assessing soil biodiversity, while employing barcoding and metabarcoding, and ecosystem functioning of soil fauna. I have managed the microarthropod monitoring in the BioBasis Nuuk monitoring programme since 2007. In the PESTPORE project, soil biology was input to soil hydrology modelling and the interplay between earthworms and deep biopores were analysed. We have developed our laboratories to utilize NGS technologies for biodiversity and ecological assessment of soil invertebrates within the framework of the eDNA Center at Aarhus University. I am vice chair of the EU COST Action network www.EUdaphobase.eu. and MC member of iPLANTA.
