Profil

Forskningen omfatter klarlæggelse af den mikrobielle omsætning i foder og fordøjelseskanal hos husdyr, specielt med henblik på at opnå øget viden om specifikke mikrobielle processer og de involverede mikroorganismer. Formålet er at optimere mikroorganismernes indflydelse på ernæring, foderudnyttelse og sundhedstilstand hos enmavede (svin og fjerkræ) og drøvtyggere samt mindske utilsigtet udledning af næringsstoffer og drivhusgasser som metan og lattergas.

Forskningen omfatter brugen af mikrobiologiske og molekylærbiologiske metoder til indentificering og kvantificering af specifikke mikroorganismer og/eller specifikke mikrobielle gener og deres ekspression samt karakterisering af mikrobielle populationers sammensætning og aktivitet.

Hovedaktiviteterne vedrører i bred forstand forskning med alternativer til de udfasede antibiotiske vækstfremmere såvel som terapeutisk antibiotika i husdyrproduktionen. Arbejdsområdet omfatter således identifikation af potentielt nye tilsætningsstoffer i form af eksempelvis plantekomponenter og -ekstrakter såvel som belysning af virkningsmekanismerne bag allerede anvendte fodertyper og tilsætningsstoffer som fermenteret vådfoder, organiske syrer samt zink og kobber. Sidstnævnte metaller er ikke at betragte som alternativer til de ovennævnte antibiotika pga. de miljømæssigt set problematiske aspekter ved brugen af disse stoffer, men kendskab til deres virkningsmekanismer kan give væsentlige fingerpeg om, hvilke egenskaber man skal søge efter hos nye additiver.
