Fatigue is often reported in chronic disease. We searched the literature and extracted information on design, methods and material. In 2285 papers malignant diseases was most frequently studied (36%), followed by infectious (10%), rheumatologic (10%), neurological (9%), and cardiovascular diseases (9%). Most studies were cross sectional (n=2083) and only 2% compared patients from different specialties. Although fatigue is an unspecific symptom, most research is isolated to single diseases or disease groups. We know little about prognosis and differences between diseases with respect to the occurrence and character of disease-related fatigue.
