Sympathetic cooling with two atomic species in an optical trap

The ultracold lithium and cesium atoms were trapped in an optical dipole trap formed by the focus of a carbon dioxide laser, and the exchange of thermal energy between the gases were studied. The optically cooled cesium gas decreases the temperature of lithium gas through the sympathetic cooling. The measured cross section for thermalizing 133Cs-7Li collisions was 8 × 10-12 cm2. The evaporation of lithium through the elastic cesium-lithium collisions were observed.
