Scientific competences
Scientific focus areas
My research is focused on diet, lifestyle, genetic susceptibility and disease development, in particular within the fields of risk factors for and implications of the development of cardio-metabolic diseases and cancer.

Scientific milestones
In 1993, I initiated the Diet, Cancer and Health Study together with Dr Anne Tjønneland from the Danish Cancer Society. The cohort consists of 57,000 participants who were followed for more than 20 years. The study also became part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition including more than 500,000 Europeans. The output from the Diet, Cancer and Health Study and the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition has been several hundred publications regarding diet, lifestyle, genetic susceptibility and development of chronic diseases together with numerous publications regarding early diagnosis and disease prognosis.

In 2012, I initiated the DIPI project (Diet and Prevention of Ischemic Heart Disease: A Translational Approach), a collaboration between Aarhus University, University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark and Harvard University. Ischemic heart disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Diet has been suggested to be an important risk factor in the development of ischemic heart disease. Contrary to previous studies, this project focuses on the qualitative composition of diet. On the basis of existing Danish, European and US data, we study dietary patterns and substitution of energy-providing foods and macronutrients. The project will be of major scientific value in the development of improved, scientifically-founded food-based dietary guidelines targeted at optimising health and preventing diet-related chronic diseases. Further, it will offer the Danish food industry new opportunities for innovation, production and marketing of healthier food.
