My Ph.D-project (After)Life of the Corpse establishes a field of artists and art works employing corpses as main art-materiality. This special kind of art seems to origin in 1980s AIDS-art, and in confrontational Body art akin to Viennese Actionism - it aims to de-abjectify the dead and dying by confronting us with dead bodies and re-vitalizing them in experience-based art productions. This art form poses questions about our societal/medical limits constructing life and death, and seeks to reveal the many governmental/personal/traditional/historical/material forces that play a part in the production of death.
While the name, Necro Art, serves to tie it into Mbembian inspired Necro Aesthetics, Necro Art has narrower defining characteristics. It belongs to an art sphere and is reliant on art experience and performativity, it thus creates a tight knit between aesthetic form, bodily experience and ethics. To highlight these features of Necro Art I am working along four trajectories: 1) by revealing different subject- and objectivisms related to corpses and death, Necro Art critiques and dismantles the subject of enlightenment; 2) Necro Art blurs the distinction between alive and dead, it conjures ghosts and create spectral environments; 3) It relies on material and performative approaches and create relatively intimate/vibrant experiences with corpses; 4) Necro Art creates and ethic which transgress death – creates a relation across this boarder. By following these themes I hope to create a concept which is both relevant within art history while revealing how engaged with ‘real’ life this art form is.
