Holly Marriott Webb

My PhD project is on the interactions between red deer, hunters and landscapes in the Scottish Highlands, as shaped through the activity of deer stalking. Focusing on developments in the 20th century, it explores the changing ways in which people have known red deer and investigates the roots of the clashing understandings of animal welfare, landscape history and human-nature relations that animate contemporary debates about deer management policy in Scotland.

It is an interdisciplinary project in history and anthropology, combining archival research with fieldwork to investigate the more-than-human history of a hunting practice. My broader academic interests are in the environmental humanities, field and walking methods, and experiments in multidisciplinary thinking. I did my MA in Global Environmental History at Uppsala University and have a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford.
