The workings of norms and pursuit of inclusion in practices of peer reviewing: destabilizing ideas of quality

Publikation: KonferencebidragPaperForskningpeer review

Knowledge production is performative. Judith Butler and Michel Foucault taught us this point already years ago: knowledge production is performative; knowledge is power and thereby productive; knowledge exerts discursive power. In Foucault’s understanding this power is not reserved to discourse as language but would be seen as realized through ‘dispositifs’, in English ‘apparatuses’, which contain all sorts of material and discursive, social and political kinds of power or enacting forces.Agential realism and various other new materialist reworkings and continuations of poststructuralist thinking emphasize that the apparatuses of knowledge production are complex, multidimensional and multifaceted, they are open-ended and indeed very dynamic. Karen Barad’s conceptualizations of the material-discursive intra-activity and entangling of material-discursive forces of and in the research apparatus (the apparatus of ‘scientific’/’academic’ knowledge production) – thus needs careful consideration and maneuvering, for the researcher to accomplish ambitions; not only ambitions about ethical entering and entangling in that apparatus, but also ambitions about contributing to the enactment of new understandings of the phenomena in focus – and of the apparatus(es) that produce(s) the phenomena. Even focusing the phenomena (cutting together/apart) becomes part of that powerful performativity and calls for careful consideration.Quality – research quality – hence links to very comprehensive, decidedly complex and vividly entangling processes in apparatuses of knowledge production, and obligations to produce quality thereby also commits the researcher(s) to keep the entire methodological specter of theoretical conceptualizations 1. entangling with ways in which to produce empirical material 2. entangling with the materials enacted 3. entangling with the ethical ambitions/criteria 4. entangling with the analytical strategies – to keep all that entanglement and all those processes of intra-activity in mind, when considering: what is quality?
