Intra-acting with Karen Barad in Psychology – and across Disciplines

With my work situated in social psychology and employing empirical analytics brought together across the
social sciences and humanities, I will contribute to this line of ideas of ways of working analytically with
agential realism by offering three brief examples of empirical analyses from my research. The first example
shows the material-discursive entanglement, involving digital and analogue relational practices, in the
enactment of an attempted transformative move in relation to gendered meaning-making and mattering
among children playing video games. The second example shows agential realist conceptualizations help
complicate common-sense understandings of the effects of aggression as played out in digital dimensions
of everyday life among children and young people. In relation to this example, I discuss how to
communicate analytical points without losing complexity as the basic condition of the enactment of the
very phenomena in focus. And the third example illustrates the need to diffractively read other theories into
agential realist thinking when, for example, introducing fantasies, dreams and fiction into an analyses of the
apparatus of subject production and of the enactment of subjective relating to digital-fictional mattering.
My main point is to show agential realist conceptualizations as productive analytical allies when read
diffractively with other theoretical approaches – and to discuss embedded challenges and potentials in such
analytical work vis-à-vis qualitative research material.
