Cyberbullying is the term used for bullying behavior conducted by or involving electronic communication. Children have increasingly early access to technologies that enable digital communication among peers in the social groups they belong to. However, this access also reaches beyond the schools and institutions and allow children to communicate digitally with a more comprehensive net of children in and beyond their local communities.
The digital social platforms available to the children makes it possible to send and share text messages, pictures, uploads, videos, and to disseminate rapid evaluations and visual or audio information. Technologies ongoingly develop new opportunities of relating, and in so doing, also incite and offer new accesses to communicate mutual reactions to the pictures, messages, videos and uploads of other children. The net furthermore enables such communication to happen anonymously. Via such scenarios, practices of bullying tend to thrive in ways that entangle digital and analogue interaction.
Cyberbullying may involve acts of humiliating, ridiculing, exposing vulnerabilities, posing of threats, shaming or insulting other children. Also opening hate groups on Facebook, creating fake social profiles, and sending fake messages from targeted children’s accounts are among the means taken up in cyberbullying.
