In this brief paper we argue that ethics is indeed a situated practice as underlined by Piper and Simons, but we suggest to refine their concept along some of the lines embedded in conceptual frameworks that would move beyond the simple dualisms of at least three aspects: 1. ‘doing good’ and ‘doing harm’, 2. analogue and virtual or digital, and 3. The human and non-human, the material and discursive.
We involve two different sets of theoretical frameworks to underline our point
Critical psychology which will in its most recent versions move beyond roots in Marxist thinking that practiced ethics as an integrated part of a political ideal – but now points to ethics as related to more generalized principles of mutual self-understanding, co-research and ongoing prototyping of common causes.
Secondly we will invoke new materialism, in an agential realist version that in offering the concept of ethico-onto-epistemology takes a rather radical stance on ethics. Ethics is taken to entangle every aspect of material-discursive intra-action and thereby also every single movement in the apparatus of research. Thus ‘the ethical’ will, as one of a multitude of intra-acting forces in the apparatus of research, entangle ways in which research questions are formed, conceptualizations chosen and brought to work, analyses enacted and disseminated.
