PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

1.Teaching Activities:

Albena Mihovska is currently teaching a 1st semester course in the B.Sc. and GMM programs and is a supervisor of TS and master projects the Cand. Polyt program. Previously, she has been involved with teaching in the Master program on Innovative Communication Technologies and Entrepreneurship (ICTE) at Aalborg University, She was one of the initiators and a main supervisor for the Joint Master ICTE Program between the Technical University of Sofia and Aalborg University between 2012-2017, and has successfully supervised more than 12 Master students to obtain their Master degree from Aalborg University. Further, between 2001-2017, she supervised 9th and 10th semester students at the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University towards the successful completion of their project work.She has successfully supervised 2 PhD students. She has been co-supervisor to visiting PhD students at the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University towards the completion of their PhD work, namely, Filippo Meucci from University of Florence, Italy, in the period 2008-2009; Orlando Cabral from Universidade de Beira Interior, Coimbra, Portugal, in the period 2008-2010, Alexander Vulpe from University Polytechnic Bucarest, Romania, in the period 2011-2013, and Razvan Craciunescu from the same university, in the period 2014-2015. All these supervisions have resulted in numerous high-quality publications in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences, and one paper was also awarded with the Best Paper Award at the WPMC 2013 conference Albena Mihovska has been a Guest Lecturer at the Faculty of Telecommunications at the Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria since 2014.She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Pompeu-Fabra, Barcelona, Spain; Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan; and the VISHWANIKETAN Insitute of Management Entrepreneurship and Engineering Technology, Navi Mumbai, India. She was a lecturer at the Summer School on Cognitive Radio and Spectrum Sharing, held during July 4-7, 2011, in Brixen, Italy.

Albena Mihovska has been involved actively in the ITU-T activity on Standards Education since 2012, which is an initiative to strengthen the collaboration between Academia and the ITU. Latest contribution has been submitted to the ITU Secretary-General’s Academia Consultation to be held on Sunday, 13 November 2016.

2.Research Activities:

Albena Mihovska has been with the Department of Business Development and Technology, Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University since February 2017. During 1999-January 2017, she was with the Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University.During 1999-2001, she was on the technical team of the EU-funded project under FP4 ACTS. During 2001-2005, she was the Technical Manager of the EU-funded under FP5 project PRODEMIS. During 2004-2009, she was the project coordinator of the EU-funded under FP6 project SIDEMIRROR. All three projects were of the special support type of instrument and had as a main objective to concentrate the European research effort by structuring and integrating the results/achievements of the IST FP4-FP6 projects and disseminating these results through four high quality, thematic book publications, published by Artech House. During 2004-2009, Albena Mihovska was involved with research activities related to defining a next generation air interface (within the frames of the EU FP6 projects WINNER, WINNER II, and CELTIC WINNER+), that largely laid the foundations for the current LTE and LTE-A specifications. Albena Mihovska was part of the project research teams working towards the identification of the system requirements and the design of the interworking mechanisms between the newly designed WINNER system and other (legacy) systems. She proposed a concept for cooperation between different systems based on an autonomous decision framework. Based on her research idea the theoretical approach was put forward as an experimental activity in the second stage of the project, namely WINNER II (2006-2007) and was successfully demonstrated at a number of international events, including the Wireless Radio Communication (WRC)’07 conference in Geneva in October-November 2007. The experimental set up was based in the Department of Electronic Systems at Aalborg University, and had been incorporated in the research activities of consequent and other projects, such as the EU CELTIC project WINNER+ and the FP7 ICT project FUTON that designed an architecture for converging heterogeneous systems and service provisioning. Albena Mihovska was part of the research group set within the WINNER project consortium, who developed the final system concept requirements for the WINNER air interface. Further, the concept of inter-system handover and the pooling of resources together, in order to decouple the physical relation between a unique gateway and a number of associated base stations that was one of the novel contributions of her PhD research work, was included in a contribution presented to the IEEE802.19 Wireless Coexistence Working Group in the meeting on July 14, 2008. During 2008-2010, Albena Mihovska was involved in research and ITU-R standardisation activities towards advanced radio system technologies for IMT-Advanced. Her research activities were about advanced radio resource management, cross-layer optimisation, and spectrum aggregation, the results of which were put forward as IMT-A standardisation proposals to the RadioCommunication Study Groups of the ITU by the WINNER+ Evaluation Group.Since 2009, Albena Mihovska has been involved with research in the area of advanced and secure wireless communications, cognitive communications, self-organizing networks and Internet of Things. She was involved in the design of a secure cognitive network universal testbed for testing of concepts and prototypes, including flexible spectrum usage, wireless sensor networks and ambient assisted living (AAL) applications and services, launched in 2010. She has been actively contributing to research in the area of advanced resource management, proposing new approaches to spectrum and carrier aggregation to enable a resource-rich and secure environment in a 5G scenario. This research has also been carried out in cooperation with the Universidade da Beira Interior, Instituto das Telecomunicações, Portugal; and the Instituto Lisbon, and University Politechnica Bucarest.Another aspect of Albena Mihovska’s research has been the practical investigation of spectrum sensing and a new hybrid approach to an optimized trade-off between sensing time and accuracy, which was carried out as part of the 9th and 10th semester student supervision within the frames of the ICTE program at the Department of Electronic Systems at Aalborg University during 2015-2016 and has resulted in two journal publications. In the course of the research, a practical testbed setup was built.Albena Mihovska proposed to study the integration of wireless and visible light communications in the context of ambient environments, and in support of the design and implementation of flexible and secure AAL services. This approach was also studied in relation to how to optimize and support reliable and high performance intensive data rate communications as required by the Internet of Things. Another area of research in the context of AAL has been the design and implementation of secure and efficient identity management, and in particular, enabling user access control and preserving anonymity of the user information, which has a direct relation to the deployment of mobile presence services. Her latest research is on novel models for large-scale and dense human-centric sensing (HCS) secure connectivity. Most recently, she has proposed a novel approach to dealing with the expected complexity, including the impact on security as a result of that, of beyond 2050 IoT networks based on the concept of macro-simplicity, which has been published as a book chapter by John Wiley & Sons Publishers. The proposed approach has not yet been explored by other researchers. The concept is currently under research and as a first step includes the design and evaluation of a probabilistic macrolevel model that abstracts the complexity of the underlying micro-elements, such as the heterogeneity of the interconnected devices and wireless technologies employed, and the dynamics of the network topology and scenarios to derive a high level model that builds on simple macro-level laws but sufficiently addresses all the micro characteristics of the complex IoT networks.Albena Mihovska has been an active contributor to the ITU-T standardization activities in the area of Internet of Things and Next Generation Networks (in the period 2010-2016) and with ETSI SMART BAN activities (since 2014).

3.International Academic Research Collaborations:

Albena Mihovska has strong collaboration skills and a large international research network. She has established joint research activities with the Wireless Networks Research Group (WNRG) under the leadership of Dr Mahasweta Sarkar at San Diego State University (SDSU), California, USA; with the group of Dr Michael Bartolacci from PennState Berks, Pennsylvania, USA; with the research group of Prof Vladimir Poulkov at the Faculty of Telecommunications at the Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria; with the research group of Dr Fernando J. Velez at the Universidade da Beira Interior, Instituto das Telecomunicações, Portugal; with the research group of Prof Milica Pejanovic-Djurisic at the University of Montenegro, Montenegro; with the research group of Dr Simona Halunga from the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest, Romania, with the group of Dr Homero Toral-Cruz from the University of Quintana Roo, Mexico; with the research group of Dr Pavlos Lazaridis at the Department of Engineering & Technology, University of Huddersfield, UK; with the research group of Prof Andreu Moia Pol at the Universidad Illes Balearas, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, the research group of Dr Elias Tragos at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas, Greece, among others. The collaboration has resulted in numerous joint publications and research projects.

4.EU-FUNDED projects:

During 1999-2001, she was appointed to the EU-funded project under FP4 ACTS, as part of the technical team. During 2001-2005, she was the Technical Manager of the EU-funded under FP5 project PRODEMIS, which defined a roadmap for the wireless future up to 2010. During 2004-2009, she was the project coordinator of the EU-funded under FP6 project SIDEMIRROR. All three projects were of the special support type of instrument and had as the main objective to concentrate the European research effort by structuring and integrating the results/achievements of the IST FP4-FP6 projects and disseminating these results through four high quality, thematic book publications, published by Artech House.From 2004-2006 Albena Mihovska was the leader of the AAU research team within the FP6 EU project WINNER that had a total funding for Aalborg University of 535.000,00 EUR and brought together the most powerful industrial and academic international players at the time in a joint effort to design a new wireless generation air interface, which laid the foundations for the LTE and LTE-A standards.From September 2006 to March 2008 Albena Mihovska was the Deputy Technical Manager of MAGNET Beyond, which realized the commercially viable personal networks (PNs) that support the users’ professional and private activities without being obtrusive and while safeguarding their privacy and security. Therein, she contributed to the finalisation of the MAGNET Beyond Platform system requirements with emphasis on the security aspects. In 2006-2008, Albena Mihovska was leading the AAU research team within the AAU project WINNER II, developed, integrated and assessed new mobile network techniques. Some of these techniques are now adopted by the 3GPP LTE and IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) standards, while others laid the foundations for LTE-Advanced and 802.16m.From 2008-2011, Albena Mihovska was the AAU research team leader and major contributor to the WINNER+ project that continued with the development and deployment of the WINNER air interface, this time under the framework of the EU CELTIC program. WINNER+ had a very strong participation to IMT-A standardization, both at ITU and 3GPPP level, and had its major findings adopted into LTE-A specifications. It was also awarded the Gold Medal in Excellent Research Project by the EU CELTIC Programme.In 2009, Albena Mihovska was main contributor to obtaining the funding and was leading part of the research activities within the FP7-ICT-SEC-2007-1 project NET INFORMATION INTEGRATION SERVICES FOR SECURITY SYSTEMS (NI2S3), that researched and implemented a reference methodology for developing security systems based on NEC Information and Integration Services, able to integrate information from many and heterogeneous sources, in order to build up or improve the situation awareness of critical infrastructures.From 2009-2011, Albena Mihovska was the Co-Technical Manager of the ICT Project ASPIRE, which developed an Advanced Sensors and Lightweight Programmable Middleware for Innovative RFID Enterprise Applications. This project had a total funding of 5.132.449,00 EUR, of which 4.471.000,00EUR were financed by the European Commission and a pioneering goal of creating middleware RFID solutions of low total cost of ownership for the Small Medium Enterprise (SME) businesses, which at the time was a main obstacle for not adopting this emerging technology. From 2010 to 2013, Albena Mihovska was involved with the EU-funded CIP-Pilot action project LIFE 2.0 that developed product-service solutions to increase the opportunities for social contacts between elderly people in their local area and for overall improvement of the elderly quality of life.During 2013-2016, Albena Mihovska has been involved as a WP7 leader in the EU funded under FP7 ICT project eWALL, developing an e-health platform and services for chronically ill patients (i.e., COPD and mild cognitive impairments). She was involved until January 2017, in the EU-funded project VOICE (still on-going) that develops an innovvoice platform, as an open online collaborative ideation system. Therein, Albena Mihovska proposed several innovative ideas to be taken towards commercialization.

5.Industrial projects:

Albena Mihovska was part of the research team of the project REASON (2009-2011), funded by HUAWEI, China in the area of reliable self-organizing networks. The main objective was to develop a framework for autonomous configuration and management of diverse radio access technologies compatible with the requirements for successful migration towards next generation systems.

6.Distinguishments and Awards:

Albena Mihovska is a member of IEEE (the leading international association for electornic and electrical engineers, www.ieee.org), INFORMS (the the leading international association for Operations Research & Analytics professionals, www.informs.org.) and IDA (association for all engineers in Denmark, www.ida.dk). She is the Secretary of the IEEE Joint Chapter on CH08337 - Denmark Section, VT06/AESS10/IT12/COM19.
