Beskrivelse
Natural habitats in the Wadden Sea have been modulated by humans for centuries. We foresee an increase in challenges related to effects of rising sea level and increasing amounts of backwater. The Wadden Sea is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site partly because of its unique nature. So the traditional ways of handling threats from the sea and increasing precipitation (building dikes and embankments) may not all accommodate the requirements of ensuring the natural dynamics of estuaries and tidal zones. How do we incorporate space for nature – what works and for what habitats and species. I will give you a few examples of managed retreat of coastal dikes and creation of salt- and freshwater lagoons as compensation of lost habitats due building of new dikes.
