Assessment for learning is founded on the learner being at the centre of the teaching and learning experience and on his/her development as a self-regulated learner. Nevertheless the assessment relationship between teachers and learners can be problematic. Students can often misunderstand assessments and what is. A fundamental element in the formative assessment process is how feedback and feed forward enable students to move forward in their learning. However, feedback is not always received positively or understood in the way its provider intended. By considering the focus of feedback and feed forward, teachers can provide students with informative and constructive guidance.
