According to scholars like Max Weber and Charles Taylor Protestantism resulted in disenchantment and desacralization. This paper seeks inspiration in scholars like Oswald Bayer, Risto Saarinen, Ronald Thiemann, and Martin Wendte in order to argue for the exact opposite position, when it comes to the Lutheran part of Protestant thinking and culture. Instead of disenchantment and desacralization Lutheranism resulted in a kind of “sacramental realism” (Thiemann) or “ideal realism” (Wendte) emphasizing divine presence in the social world. This paper analyses the role of religion in opposite political and social imaginaries in both historical as well as in contemporary societies.
