The purpose of this seminar is to reflect upon the nature and processes of assessment – To refresh and develop ideas and approaches to assessment of student learning. Participants will collaborate to identify the scope and nature of challenges when assessing graduate learning outcomes, as well as to analyze what institutional systems/frameworks are needed in order to handle the challenges effectively. We have invited Simon Barrie, Director at Institute for Teaching and Learning at The University of Sydney with responsibilities for the collaborative leadership, implementation of the University’s teaching and curriculum renewal strategies. to work with local coordinators with local cooridinators from each center to facilitate the two workshops. Simon is the Director Teaching and Learning at The University of Sydney. He is a senior member of the University’s Education Portfolio with responsibilities for the collaborative leadership and implementation of the University’s teaching and curriculum renewal strategies. He leads the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) and, working with the Heads of the Learning Centre and the Maths Learning Centre, Simon oversees the strategic direction of the three units. His research explores the nature of student learning experiences and learning outcomes in universities; higher education curriculum and teaching, the academic experience of teaching, and the academic development processes associated with efforts to improve university teaching and curriculum. His particular research expertise is in how higher education develops and assures generic graduate learning outcomes – or graduate attributes, as they are commonly known in Australia. His research has focused on; the contested nature of graduate attributes amongst stakeholder groups, the teaching and curriculum strategies that foster their development, assessment strategies to assure graduates’ achievement of such outcomes, and the organizational change strategies associated with innovative curriculum renewal to achieve these outcomes. His work on graduate learning outcomes has informed curriculum and policy development at universities in Australia, Europe, Canada and Asia. He has been an international advisor and reference group member for several large-scale curriculum development and research projects on graduate learning outcomes in Europe and Australia and he has led national research and development projects in Australia. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Teaching in Higher Education and the Editorial Advisory Board of Critical Studies in Teaching and Learning.
