ABSTRACT. When the Chinese male performer of female roles Mei Lanfang and his jingju (Beijing opera) troupe made a guest appearance in Moscow in 1935, the Russian stage director Vsevolod Meyerhold approvingly explained to the journal Sovetskoe iskusstvo: ‘To have a male actor perform a woman is the highest form of conventional theatricality’. To test his statement and put it more into perspective, in this article I examine Meyerhold’s own practice of cross-gender casting by looking at his castings of actresses for male parts in a small but significant number of instances during his long career as a stage director, and contrast them with his fewer and less poignant castings for actors in female parts.
