Beskrivelse

The paper discussed the paradox that while the gender gap in the music industry favors men, the opposite is the case in participatory singing culture. National and international studies indicate that in choral and communal singing, women and girls are over-represented. For well over half a century, international research has observed a “missing males problem” in especially children’s and adolescents’ singing and pointed out that the present tendency among males to view singing as “sissy” and as a feminine type of musicking has century-old roots. Moreover, because the teenage years – which are the years in which boys tend to opt out of singing – involves a greater change for the male voice, boys might run a greater “personal risk” in vocal expression in an already vulnerable time of their lives. Presenting and discussing findings from a range of recent Danish surveys, this paper will argue that the “missing males” in singing culture is an important part of understanding gender inequality in music.
