In this talk I chart the course of Brexit, focusing on how Ireland came to provide its ultimate backstop. From diplomatic lobbying in the EU, to the DUP propping up Theresa May’s government, policy actors from the island of Ireland have been central in giving shape to Brexit. In this, historical relations between Britain and Ireland loom large, including the legacy of conflict in and over Northern Ireland.

How did Ireland become a focal point in the negotiations?

Why had it not been an issue in the referendum debate?

What impact does Brexit have on the peace agreement in Northern Ireland? On British Irish relations? and on the integrity of the United Kingdom?

Why is it so important to the EU, that it won’t compromise on the so-called ‘backstop’?
