Disorder or Distress? Hermeneutic injustices of overdiagnosis within psychiatry

Abstract: Within recent years, issues of epistemic injustice in health care systems have increasingly been the target of research. It has, for example, been shown how testimonial injustices lead to underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis of people with mental illnesses. However, issues of overdiagnosis within psychiatry have been much less studied. In this talk, I will argue that problematic diagnostic practices within psychiatry can lead to overdiagnosis of mental disorders, which constitute instances of hermeneutic injustice.
