AU Professor Gert Tinggaard Svendsen will introduce us to his research on how the Danes are thinking and acting in the Danish work environment. His motto: “Control is good, but trust is cheaper.”

Danes - the most trusting people

Many times while touring the Danish countryside, foreigners are amused by the sight of unmanned stalls with fresh picked strawberries and crisp asparagus. They are even more surprised to see next to them a small payment box—with extra money for change—which the stall owner will collect in the evening with all of the earnings. In other places of the world, the strawberries, asparagus and money would undoubtedly have disappeared.

Not in Denmark; when it comes to trust the Danes are World Champions. In Denmark, this is evident by the trust in public authorities and law enforcement agencies. What is even more, it is not a rare occurrence to leave our babies in unwatched prams outside of the shops with no worries or concerns. At first glance, this Danish trust may seem silly and naive. However, from a social perspective it is a great asset. The fact that we are so trustful may contribute to an overall social coherence, a stronger economy and more happiness.

All are invited to benefit from this interesting seminar on the Danes’ way of thinking and acting.

Speaker

Professor Gert Tinggaard Svendsen, AU Department of Political Science will introduce us to his research about Danes and trust. The seminar will be based on his book 'Trust'.

Do you know this man? Probably not. If you were Danish there's a 78% chance you would trust him anyway. Everyone shows some degree of trust – in family, friends, even strangers. This man is not your average Dane. In fact, he solved the puzzle of Denmark’s success, which had scholars and economists baffled for decades. The answer is simple: trust, and the remarkable way most Danes trust him and all the other people they don’t know. His name: Gert Tinggaard Svendsen, trust expert from Aarhus University.

His motto: “Control is good, but trust is cheaper.”
