Analysis of Practical Implementation for Secure Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

Spectrum sensing is vitally important functionality for the cognitive radio (CR) device because it allows for assessing, which part of the spectrum is unoccupied and suitable for temporal use. Most of the proposed research efforts until now have been based on theoretical findings about the performance of the various approaches to spectrum sensing and there is only limited work that reports on practical implementations. This paper proposes an optimization algorithm for improving the existing cyclostationary and energy detectors based on a trade-off between sensing time and accuracy, and we evaluate it in a practical implementation scenario with an USRP and GNU radio. We introduce adaptivity in the spectrum sensing process as a means to optimize it. We also analyze some details of the particular implementation, which would not be applicable and cannot be considered in a computer simulation but may influence the spectrum sensing performance. Finally, we compare the performance of the examined methods for a scenario of very low SNR conditions, fading channel and limited mobility of the secondary user receiver.
