Research

In recent years my main focus have been on the internet and the emerging matrix of media consisting of both "old", non-digital media, digitized media, and born-digital media.

I have participated in a number of national and international research projects, such as the National Danish "Modinet"-project on "Media and Democracy in the Network Society" (2002-2005), the EU COST a20 project on the "Impact of the Internet on Mass Media" (2002-2006) and a national developmental project aiming at the establishing of a national Internet archive "netarkivet.dk" from 2000-2005. From 2008-2011 I headed the research project Changingborders - Mediatization and Citizenship. I am currently participating in the research project LARM and in a EU COST action on Webbased data collection methods.

My work is mainly based on a rather undogmatic idea of evolutionary media theory. Among the themes are "The Nordic Model of the Infosociety", "the Relation Between Print Media and Online News Media", "The 5'th matrix of Media in the History of Man". "What is web 2.0? A new version of what?". "Digital Divide or Cultural Diversity?"

I have been particularly interested in the conceptual development of computers from the early ideas of the logical machine formed around the mainframe, over the ideas of a toolbox more or less completely malleable in Human Computer Interaction studies formed around the PC to the concept of digital media emerging in the interpretation of the internet and mobile devices. While the first concept can be traced back to Turings idea of an automatic machine, the latter can be traced back to his concept of the 'choice machine' - both ideas articulated in his seminal 1936 paper on computable numbers. A basic issue is what these very different concepts of the computer have in common if anything? See also list of Publications.

In my more esoteric mind states I have also been concerned with the concept of noise, and the role of redundancy in heterogenous systems such as languages, cultures and societies.

New times at au.dk/en

The university’s website is being redesigned. The design and content will therefore change, and you may experience for a while that old and new sections are mixed together, and that the content is not in its usual place.

We hope that the new website will make up for any inconvenience, and that you will enjoy greater coherence throughout and find the website simpler to use.

Why are we making a mess?

In the time ahead, you will notice a mixture of old and new designs in the pages on the website.

In spring 2011, Aarhus University’s nine main academic areas were reduced to four, and the fifty-five departments became twenty-six. This was to unify the organisation and to strengthen the university’s interdisciplinary approach. We are now following suit by restructuring the entire website to ensure more coherence in the content and design.

Such an exercise takes time – and we hope you will bear with us!

Take a short cut

Under the HOT KEY at the top right, you can find links to the most frequently used content on the website, as well as the two new universes for staff and students.

Where can I find it?

Use the new mega dropdowns to get an overview of the website’s content. They open when you run your mouse over the navigation at the top.
