My current research explores the meeting ground between spirituality, consciousness research and globalisation.
- I lead a cross-disciplinary research programme funded by the Research Council for Culture and Communication (FKK) on "Buddhism & Modernity: Global Dynamics of Transmission and Translation". See www.buddhismandmodernity.au.dk
- My own project in this context has the title "Buddhism and Beyond: Global Networks, Modernity and Spirituality" and focuses primarily on Tibetan Buddhist traditions and on (neuro-) scientific research on meditation.
- I also participate in an ongoing collaborative research on meditation with Andreas Roepstorff og Peter Vestergaard from the Centre for Functionally Integrative Neuroscience her at AU and with Jes Bertelsen et al. at Vækstcenteret in Nørre Snede.
In addition, I am continuing to conduct research on the nexus between politics, development and religion, focusing on the Himalayan region and here especially Ladakh in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir.
- In this context I participate in the research programme "Political Reenchantment: Religious Dimensions of Democratization in Asia", funded by the Strategic Research Council and headed by my colleague Nils Bubandt.
- My own project in this connection concerns Tibetan Buddhist Lamas' participation in and significance for contemporary political processes and practices.
Publications I am currently working on include:
- an anthology about secularism and democracy in Asia (co-edited with Nils Bubandt);
- an artikel on meditation research and the cerebral subject
- and an article co-authored with Andreas Roepstorff about the challenges and potentials for collaborative research on meditation involving scientists and contemplative practitioners.
As far as concerns teaching
- I have recently been involved in the development of a new supplementary degree programme in sociology which is based at the Institute of Anthropology, Archaeology and Linguistics and is offered in collaboration with the Institute for Political Science and the Institute for Philosophy and the History of Ideas. I currently teach a course "Introduction to Sociology" in this context.
- I am also involved in the development of a new master's level degree programme in Human Security
My administrative responsibilities include serving as Ph.D. Programme Director for our Institute and to represent our Institute on the Academic Council of the Faculty of Humanities.
