Project description

In my research project I explore why we see so many artists right now that are preoccupied with masking, camouflaging and hiding. What are they hiding from? And why do they emerge in this particular historical moment? My thesis is that they emerge as a response to a physiognomic renaissance - a particular coming together of biometric technologies that propagate an illusion of Minority Report-like transparency and bring about a biopolitical hyper-control. I am especially interested in how art counters the physiognomic logics produced by biometrics.

PhD fellow in the the research program Contemporary Aesthetics and Technology.
