Project description:
The Danish Government’s energy policy states that by 2035 the power and heat supply should be covered entirely by renewable energy sources (RES). Increasing the penetration of intermittent RES complicates the challenge of maintaining a balance between demand and supply.

Implementation of smart-grids is a way of addressing this issue of grid balancing under more volatile electricity production. One of the characteristics of a smart-grid is effective utilization of Demand Response (DR) programs, where consumers adjust their demand to meet supply and thereby increase the overall efficiency of the energy system.

Taking offset in the retrofit demonstration project READY, this PhD project aims at investigating the smart grid potential in existing residential buildings. First, retrofit solutions that increases the buildings' smart grid potential is identified and evaluated through simulations. Secondly, the solutions is tested in an existing building, prior and after retrofit. The objective is to set up a general methodology for targeting and quantifying the effect of different energy flexibility technologies related to energy retrofit of buildings.

The project is financed by the Danish energy research and development program ForskEl.
