Our laboratory investigates the functional properties of proteins (such as hemoglobin, myoglobin, hemocyanin and carbonic anhydrase) and their physiological roles in oxygen transport and nitric oxide metabolism in the cardio-circulatory system. We seek to understand the adaptive role and the molecular mechanisms that regulate oxygen uptake and delivery and nitric oxide signalling in a wide range of animal species. We are particularly interested in “extreme” vertebrates, including high-altitude mammals and birds, hypoxia-tolerant turtles and fish, hibernating bears and diving marine mammals.
