Title of PhD-project: Enhancing phosphorus utilization by adapting the use of cover crops to soil type and P-status


Phosphorus (P) can be a limiting nutrient for crop production despite of the large amounts of fertilizer and animal manure P, in agricultural soils in Denmark. Rock phosphate, which is the raw material for production of P fertilisers as well as feed phosphates a limited non-renewable resource becoming scarce in the future. Excess of P in soil may lead to eutrophication in the aquatic environments. Therefore, it is important to find ways to increase the utilization of phosphorus in soil and fertilisers.

In Denmark, farmers are obligated to have cover crops on their fields, in order to reduce nitrate leaching. The aim of this PhD project is to investigate if cover crops can increase the P utilization. Different cover crops have different strategies for P uptake as well as they take up different amounts of P. The idea is examine whether some types of cover crops can improve the utilization of P in soil. It is expected that the effect of the cover crops will depend on soil type and soil P status.
