Profile

The lives of around half of humanity are made possible by symbiotic fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. The uses of natural resources is this half has been my main interest. Thus, my research activities have been centred around legumes, ranging from individual plant physiology to natural resource management at systems level and the spin-off that the legumes create in the surrounding natural and socio-economic spheres if the legumes are used innovative. I have a particular interest in developing an understanding of the nutrient and matter dynamics in low-input intercropped and organic systems. Methodologically I have based the later efforts on the use of tracers. Further, the nutritional qualities of grain legumes have been studied focussing on the link between genetic and environmental variability, these studies are yet under publication. Following a value chain approach, consequences of the market integration of adapted legumes in the rural areas of developing countries and the impact on the farmers’ livelihood and soil fertilities have been studied on-farm. Currently, innovation and innovation models are being studied in value chains.

My research profile has thus moved from focusing on natural resources and their dynamic utilization in agroecosystems to increasingly taking the society point of view as moving on to the producers, to their livelihoods and quality of diets, and finally to innovation models in value chains.

My work is well received by my colleagues as demonstrated a good average number of citations by colleagues (see figure below) and a Hirsh-index of 17 as identifiable via ISI Web of Knowledge, Thomsens Reuters. Currently 58 papers has been published in international peer-reviewed scientific journal, 13 books or book chapters has been published under peer-review, and more than 50 research reports has been published under semi peer-reviewed conditions like conference proceedings, research communications, etc.

Also I have given numerous talks at national and international conferences, seminar and workshops. These research findings are further communicated in popular media outlets.

I collaborate with researchers worldwide. This is reflected in the very wide span of collaboration projects that I have been involved in and the substantial number of papers that has resulted from this collaboration.
