Profile

My research interests include nature-society relations, science and knowledge, and North-South inequalities. My regional focus is Latin America and its connections to the wider world with a particular emphasis on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Brazil.

My ongoing research deals with agriculture, migration and environmental change in South American savanna landscapes. Using comparative, transnational and global history approaches I study agricultural colonization and modernization projects in Brazil and Bolivia since the Second World War.

Before coming to Aarhus I worked as a teaching and research assistant for Latin American history at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin (2007-2014). I was a Fox International Fellow at Yale University (2010-2011).

My main publications include Globalisierte Geologie: Eine Wissensgeschichte des Eisenerzes in Brasilien, 1876-1914 (Campus 2017); Brasilien in der Welt: Region, Nation und Globalisierung, 1870-1945 (ed. with C. Peters, S. Rinke and F. Schulze, Campus 2013); Brazil and the Great Acceleration (special issue of Varia Historia, ed. with A. Acker, 2018). I am a co-managing editor of Diálogos Latinoamericanos (Aarhus University) and an associate editor of Varia Historia (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais).
