Profile

My project studies the role of ideology, ideas and thought in the early emergence of capitalism in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. I look at how agricultural writers intervened in the social struggles and conflicts around the emergence of capitalism. They intervened by inventing new ideas, ideals, values and norms that furthered the kind of property relations, labour-processes and types of knowledge conducive to the emergence of capitalism. At the turn of the eighteenth century, English agriculture was characterised by capitalist relations and a corresponding culture and ideology of improvement. My thesis is that the ideology of improvement was not simply a reflection of capitalist development but an important factor in the making of capitalist relations from the mid-sixteenth to the end of the seventeenth century.

In general, my research concentrates on new debates on the historiography of capitalism, early modern English social and cultural history, and the history of attitudes to work and workers from antiquity until today.

My areas of interest are:
- The history of work and attitudes to work and workers

- The history of capitalism and markets

- The history of political and economic thought

- Early modern intellectual and social history

- Political economy and the critique of political economy

- Marx, marxism and labor history

- Recent discussions on work, labor market, technology and the future of work
