Talented students must be developed all the way from PhD to professorship.

No more silo mentality in an ivory tower. The university needs to share its knowledge with the community.

Biogeochemical reactions in the oxic zone and those occurring in the underlying anoxic layer of marine sediments have been shown to be electrically coupled over centimetre distances. Based on experimental observations and theory, this could be mediated by bacteria. In other words, bacteria are apparently capable of respiring aerobically at lower depths in the sediment despite a local unavailability of oxygen. A composition of bacterial nanowires (i.e. electrically conductive pili-like structures) and conductive minerals was suggested to play a role in the electron transfer. However, this concept has remained hypothetical. In my PhD project, I aim to evaluate the actual mechanism of electron flow as well as to investigate the possibility of analysing these electric networks in situ.
