My research is about acetate remineralization in marine sediments. The main goal is to examine if marine methanogens can carry out anaerobic acetate oxidation in syntrophic association with sulfate reducers. It is planned as a PhD project, and consists largely of three parts. One is about proving the concept of syntrophy using pure cultures. To identify and eventually isolate the relevant aceticlastic methanogens from environment samples, stable-isotope probing incubations are set up with enrichment samples from Aarhus Bay. Last but not least, 2-dimensional ion chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (IC-MS) method is under development to quantify acetate in marine sediment at the lowest concentrations ever tried.
