Mit forskningsområde omhandler kemiske stoffer (små molekyler), der forekommer i landbrugsplanterne eller i landbrugsmiljøet. Jeg har opbygget og er team leader for Team Naturstofkemi og Miljøkemi (se under "Yderligere information"). Mit team forsker i a) landbrugsplanternes naturlige kemiske stoffer, der kan have effekter både som alternative plantebeskyttelsesmidler og som sundhedsfremmende stoffer, b) pesticiders skæbne i miljøet samt c) agricultural og environmental metabolomics. 

Min forskning vedrørende landbrugsplanternes naturstoffer omhandler stoffernes forekomst i planterne under varierende dyrkningsforhold og stresspåvirkninger; udskillelsen af stofferne fra landbrugsplanterne, stoffernes omsætning, binding og udvaskning i jordmiljøet; deres effekt på jordens mikrobielle miljø; optagelse og metabolisering i mennesker og dyr; sundhedsfremmende effekter; isolering og strukturopklaring. Vi arbejder med naturstoffer i kornsorterne hvede, rug og majs, bælgplanter, græs, tropiske medicinalplanter, grønsager, krydderier, og den tropiske landbrugsafgrøde amarant og bruger state-of-the-art masse spektrometri (LC-MSMS, LC-MSQTRAP, LC-TOF, GC-TOF og LC-MS-DAD).

Vi har i Team Naturstofkemi og Miljøkemi opbygget en stærk specialisering indenfor benzoxazinoidernes kemi (kvantititativ analyse, metabolisering, strukturopklaring, effekter, syntese, isolering). Benzoxazinoiderne er en gruppe af naturstoffer der forekommer i de fleste kornsorter og nogle få tokimbladede planter. Benzoxazinoiderne er små molekyler med biologiske effekter, der gør at de kan være forsvarsstoffer for de planter der producerer dem; sundhedsfremmende stoffer for dyr og mennesker der indtager dem via føden; og af interesse som rent medicinske stoffer. Benzoxazinoiderne var centrale  i FATEALLCHEM projektet (FP5, www.fateallchem.dk 2001-2004) og i  BREAD AND BREAKFAST (www.breadandbreakfast.nu 2009-2014). Aktuelt er benzoxazinoiderne fokuspunktet i projekterne RyeproC (www.ryeproc.dk), BENZEX (http://www.eracaps.org/joint-calls/era-caps-funded-projects/era-caps-first-call-%E2%80%93-2012/biosynthesis-transport-and-exudation ) og “Bioactive secondary metabolites in wheat – a hitherto underexploited resistance mechanism against Fusarium Head Blight infection and the biosynthesis of mycotoxins”. 

Min forskning foregår i et bredt interdisciplinært samarbejde med: agronomer, biologer, patologer, molekylærbiologer, veterinærer, ukrudtsforskere, mikrobiologer, statistikere, læger.
