Sustaining A Regional Screen Ecosystem In A Small Nation

Publikation: KonferencebidragKonferenceabstrakt til konference

I will present an overview of my postdoctoral project, which addresses the question of how Aarhus can create a resilient, sustainable regional screen ecosystem in the context of a small nation. This project aims to identify the unique impact of regionalisation and innovations in screen policy by mapping the contemporary screen-industrial ecosystem of Aarhus at the micro-level. In particular, the West Danish Film Fund (Den Vestdanske Filmpulje), Filmby Aarhus, and their initiatives across the region will be a central case study through which I intend to gather empirical insights into the conditions that allow the screen culture of a small, peripheral Danish region to thrive in the face of national and global competition. This research speaks to a larger question of how regional creative screen industries — especially those in small states like Denmark — can better harness the geographical distribution of resources to sustain its current growth and unique identity, while at the same time balance national cultural policy with local identity.
