The parallel adult education system: a Danish contribution to lifelong learning at university level

University programs can be organized according to two different principles. They can be organized as a systematic acquisition of research-based knowledge with an increasing complexity, as (to a greater or lesser extent) related to future needs for skills within the particular professional field.Or they can be organized based on the student’s (social and vocational) competences, on which research-based knowledge is built.
University courses are traditionally organized according to the first principle. But in a lifelong learning perspective the last principle will provide the greatest opportunity for competence development.
The Danish university educational system includes two parallel programs: a traditional academic track (candidatus) and an alternative practice-based track (master). The practice-based program was established in 2001 and organized as part time. The total program takes half the time to complete compared to a traditional academic program. The training is based on the students’ prior learning and vocational competences and experiences and with the purpose of combining the students’ practical experiences with formal research-based knowledge acquisition.
The article describes some preconditions and some challenges in implementing the program. It describes the difficulties associated with measuring prior learning and the pedagogical problems related to combine vocational experiences with formal school-based knowledge. But experiences show that the difficulties can be overcome.
