The amazing vitality of things that don’t exist

Publikation: Forskning - peer reviewBidrag til bog/antologi

This contribution moves in the grey zone between lexicographical reality and fiction. It starts three hundred years ago and presents some dictionaries that do not exist. It then follows the historical development and shows how these dictionaries recently have got company by lexicographical theories that flourish although they do not exist either. It argues that this mess has been created and have survived until our days because some lexicographers follow their personal preferences instead of being faithful to their empirical basis. The contribution sends an optimistic message praising the vitality of the non-existing dictionaries and theories.
