In my dissertation, I make a comparative sociological investigation of scientific careers by tracing and mapping the records of accomplishment, career trajectories and social traits of highly prolific scientists. More specifically, the aim is to conduct a cross-country analysis of the careers of top researchers in Denmark and the UK by looking into the social dynamics of scientific elite formation. An understudied aspect of the careers of elite scientists is whether their rise to the uppermost stratum of the academic hierarchy can be attributed to scientific talent, performance and merit alone, or what role surrounding factors, such as: background, circumstances and access to exceptional research conditions, play. Ultimately, the objective is to develop typologies of elite science careers across national and disciplinary boundaries by identifying the conditions and criteria necessary for achieving remarkable scholarly success.
