BACKGROUND
Airborne Alternaria and Cladosporium spores are ubiquitous atmospheric constituents. Not only are they known to be potent pathogens to a variety of agricultural crops, but also to contain aeroallergens associated with severe asthma. However, at present their contribution to the atmosphere and impact on human health are underreported.

AIM
One of the main purposes of this project is to establish the most relevant local sources of airborne spores in Denmark and investigate the differences in the seasonal spore load in the areas of western and eastern Denmark.

RESEARCH OUTLINE
Light microscopy analysis of data from the station in western Denmark. Comparison of fungal spore concentrations and seasonality measured at two stations. Investigation of association between possible local spore sources and peak spore concentrations, with a special attention to harvesting periods. Analysis of long-term trends of spore concentrations and their relationship with meteorological parameters.
