BACKGROUND

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are two gut inflammatory disorders that have excessive influence on life quality. NEC and IBD are influenced by diet and gut microbial community and they are both associated with systemic inflammation. Mother´s milk protects the developing gut from NEC and adverse reactions to bacteria and toxins, but there are many unknown factors and mechanisms involved. A better understanding of these could facilitate in the development of diets effective in the protection of the infant from these inflammatory diseases.

 

AIM

The aim of the present PhD project is to obtain a thoroughly mechanistic insight into NEC and IBD inflammation states and to elucidate preventive dietary strategies with bioactive milk components thorough the application of systems biology approaches using an animal model consisting of NEC‐sensitive preterm pigs.

 

RESEARCH OUTLINE

In this project, metabolomics will serve as the fundamental tool. The metabolomics analyses will consist of both nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to obtain a broad metabolite coverage.
In addition, the PhD project also aims to develop multivariate data analytical strategies to integrate epigenetic, proteomic and metabolomics data sets. Based on pathway analysis and interaction network analysis, the aim is to develop a generic multi-omics biological module concept that can identify regulatory functions involved in inflammation and the application of dietary preventive strategies.
