Project title: Metagenomic and metabolomic aspects of plant-microbe interactions during organic nitrogen acquisition in rhizosphere

Project description: Knowledge about organic nitrogen (N) contribution to N budget in leguminous plants is limited to date. In order to elucidate legume potential for organic N acquisition, we need to understand mechanisms behind the process knowing that microbes and plants can compete for organic nitrogen pool in soil
My research area deals with metagenomic and metabolomic aspects of plant-microbe interactions during organic nitrogen (N) acquisition. I study the assimilation of isotopically labelled amino acids by white clover (Trifolium repens). The objective of the project is to define the molecular and metabolic basics underlying plant-microbe interaction mechanisms in soil organic N cycling, with the specific aims to (1) identify key microbial players in organic N cycling and assess their biological activity, (2) determine plant secondary metabolites mediating relationships between plants and microorganisms, (3) quantify the resulting plant and microbial uptake of organic N over a short time scale in order to show the dynamics of plant-microbe competition.
